Darts and Draught at O'Neill's Maidenhead - Review

Jasmine McQuade

Recently, three members of The Spark were kindly invited to visit and review O’Neill’s pub in

Maidenhead. The establishment sits conveniently right across from Maidenhead train station,

which is a simple fifteen minute train journey from Reading.

O’Neill’s is an Irish-themed pub chain with 49 outlets across the UK. Being a chain, you can

expect uniformity across its pubs, with a reliable and consistent range of food and drinks. The

pub offers well-poured Guinness and other typical Irish beverages. We also enjoyed soft drinks

and cider at reasonable prices. The food is also comforting and inclusive, as the pub has a

range of vegetarian and vegan pub grub alongside its meat options. There are ‘mix and match’

deals on small plates, so we shared small but filling portions of crispy king prawns and halloumi

fries. We also had a pizza with a vegan cheese alternative.

What differentiates O’Neill’s in Maidenhead from the O’Neill’s in Reading is its Arrowsmith’s

digital dart boards, which start at £9 per person for a 90-minute slot. Neither of us had played

digital darts before, so the experience was a lot of fun. Each board has its own booth that can

comfortably fit a group of friends, and though they look like ordinary dart boards, they are

actually connected to a digital database of games. We found that playing darts this way keeps

the games fresh and exciting, it also removes the hassle of having to keep score as it

automatically keeps track for you. Furthermore, the ability to adjust the difficulty of each game

makes them more accessible than a standard game of darts, but optionally more challenging for

the more advanced players. This style of playing becomes increasingly more interesting after a

couple of pints!

The spacious layout and low-lighting of the pub in the early afternoon that we visited created a

laid-back atmosphere, to which we were able to enjoy conversation and our drinks alongside an

eclectic range of background music. The staff are also very attentive; our server in particular

was extremely knowledgeable about the drinks and the darts, giving great recommendations

and occasionally checking on how we were doing. We felt his friendly service to be especially

welcoming.

Overall, The Spark recommends a visit to O’Neill’s if one ever finds themselves hungry for grub and darts in Maidenhead!
